The Thurgood play has already made a mark for itself, earning accolades from the critics and the public at large. What makes this show so remarkable is that, in many ways, the play is actually a history lesson about one of the most impressive figures in American history. The difference is that this is one history lesson that will have you at the edge of your seat.

Learning From The Past

Everyone knows just how important Thurgood Marshall is to American history. His role isn’t just that of a civil rights persona- he is also one of the most important legal personalities, having the distinction of being the first African-American to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. The Thurgood play follows the life of Marshall, right from his early days as a young man trying to make a living as a waiter.

Many people wonder what makes the life of Marshall so unique. Interestingly enough, it is not the obstacles that he had to overcome that make him so unforgettable- although he certainly had his share of hard times, growing up in poverty during a time when race was a volatile issue. But what sets Marshall apart from the rest is his sense of dignity and his overwhelming respect and belief in the power of justice. When so many people were raving and ranting over the politics of power and race, Marshall remained steadfast in his belief in true justice. He was not concerned about which color people were; but he cared deeply about bringing justice to the oppressed.

A Heavy Role

Needless to say, donning the main role in the one-man Thurgood play is no easy task. One-man shows in general can be difficult to pull off; the actor must have enough charisma and fortitude to not only carry the story but to keep the audience engaged as well. Thurgood is even more difficult because the persona of the man is not only huge, it is complex. The play doesn’t just depict Marshall as a flat, faceless hero. The audience gets to see a very human side to him as well- all this is meshed with the important historical events that happened around that time, particularly the case known as the Brown v. Board of Education United States Supreme Court decision. It is this single case that effectively set the stage for the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

The current production of the Thurgood play has the Hollywood actor Laurence Fishburne playing the role of Marshall. Critics have been raving about his performance, describing it as a rare combination of humor and quiet dignity. At the same time, he manages to capture the intensity and passion that characterized Marshall’s passion for law. This is certainly not your run-of-the-mill biopic; this play manages to encompass the pains both in the success and failures of one very special man.

If you’ve been trying to get tickets for the Thurgood play, you’ve probably noticed that they are pretty hard to find. Instead of standing in line for tickets that you might not get, you can always order your theater passes online from an authorized ticket vendor.

The MLK Jr. Concert Series continues bringing live music to the BK masses tonight with special guest Jill Scott. Scott, a Philly native, is an artist with “an abiding, deep commitment to lyrical honesty and
musical integrity. Simply put, if Jill feels it, she writes and sings it. While vivid imagery, metaphor analogy are her stock in trade, there’s no pretense, no hiding. She’s upfront, in-your-face always real, using her own distinctive poetry to breathe life into words, digging inside to bring forth the accompanying emotion.” While it doesn’t say it on the site, I heard a rumor that Estelle may be joining her on stage today. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
